Top 5 questions to ask your Ontario wedding photographer

Booking a photographer is one of the biggest decisions you will make during planning. These five questions separate the right fit from a regrettable contract.

Why these questions matter

Your photographer is with you for most of the day. They shape how you remember every moment, and you are trusting them with something you cannot redo. A beautiful portfolio is a starting point, not a finish line. Before you sign a contract, these five questions will help you figure out whether a photographer is the right fit for your day — not just your Pinterest board.

Question One

Have you shot at our venue before?

Ontario has an enormous range of wedding venues — from the stone bridges and river gorges around Elora to converted barns outside Caledon, lakefront estates in Muskoka, and downtown lofts in Hamilton. Each venue has its own lighting quirks, best angles, and logistical realities. A photographer who has worked at your venue knows where the light falls at 4 PM, which corners photograph poorly, and how to build a portrait timeline that works with the space. If they have not been there before, ask how they plan to prepare — a site visit or detailed venue research is a reasonable expectation.

Question Two

What happens if you are sick or have an emergency?

This is the question most couples forget to ask, and the one that matters most when things go sideways. A professional photographer should have a backup plan — whether that is a network of trusted colleagues, a second shooter who can step in as lead, or a formal partnership with another studio. If the answer is vague, that is a red flag. Your wedding day does not get rescheduled because someone caught the flu.

Question Three

How many weddings do you shoot per weekend?

Some photographers book Saturday and Sunday weddings on the same weekend. That is their right, but it affects you. A photographer who shot a ten-hour day yesterday may not bring the same energy to your morning-of prep. Ask directly, and decide what level of dedication you expect.

Question Four

Can I see a full gallery — not just highlights?

Highlight reels are curated. Every photographer's best 30 images look great. What separates a strong photographer from an average one is consistency across the full day — the candids during cocktail hour, the reception dancing, the details that did not have perfect light. Ask for a complete delivery gallery from a wedding similar in size and venue style to yours. If they hesitate, take note.

Question Five

What is included in your package, and what costs extra?

Ontario wedding photography packages vary wildly. Some include engagement sessions, albums, and a second shooter as standard. Others charge separately for each. Get a written breakdown before you compare prices. A $3,500 package that includes everything may be a better deal than a $2,800 package with $1,200 in add-ons. Ask specifically about travel fees if your venue is outside the photographer's home region — rural Ontario venues like those across Wellington County can mean significant driving.
